The Quiet Ingredient Behind Every Clear, Lightweight Gel

Scroll through the INCI list on most modern gels, serums, or lightweight sunscreens and you’ll find one entry most people scroll straight past: Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer — known in our line as AM-U21.
It’s not a headline active. It never goes on the front of the bottle. But it’s frequently the reason the formula behaves the way it does — gels fast, feels weightless, and holds particulates in suspension without turning cloudy or grainy. Here’s what it’s actually doing.
Fast, Clean Gelling — No Heat Required
At around 0.5% usage, AM-U21 converts plain water into a clear, springy gel in minutes at room temperature — no heating step, no extended mixing cycle. Compared with rheology modifiers that need a heat-and-hold process just to hydrate, this cuts a meaningful amount of time out of batch processing, which matters as much on the plant floor as it does in the lab.
Built to Play Well With Actives and Sunscreen Filters
Traditional carbomers can clash with sunscreen filters and certain actives, leading to the “balling” or pilling texture formulators dread at the bench. AM-U21’s shorter-chain, pseudoplastic flow structure behaves differently under shear — it shears thin easily and levels out smoothly on application rather than dragging or rolling.
That property is exactly why it shows up so often in lightweight, high-SPF sunscreen formulas: it carries a heavy filter load without adding the weight or tackiness that usually comes with it.
Suspension Without Settling
For formulas carrying visible particulates — petal fragments, shimmer, gold flake, encapsulated actives — suspension stability is the difference between a product that looks premium on day one and still looks premium on day ninety. AM-U21’s crosslinked network holds particulates in place through extended room-temperature storage, without the slow settling that shows up as a visible layer at the bottom of the jar.

Where It Shows Up in Finished Products
- Post-workout cooling gels — glides on without the tacky, film-forming feel that makes a gel cling to fabric
- Scalp serums — carries oil-phase actives at low usage levels while keeping the texture light rather than greasy
- Overnight repair gels — supports multiple thin layers without a heavy, pore-clogging feel, which matters in leave-on, layered routines

The Takeaway
Formulation, like cooking, runs on a few unglamorous workhorses that never get named on the label but do most of the structural work. AM-U21 is one of them — the raw material equivalent of the roux that holds a sauce together. Next time you’re reading an INCI list and spot “Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer” buried in the middle, that’s usually a sign someone on the formulation team knew exactly what they were doing.
